Reducing the rising number of truck accidents

On Behalf of | Nov 16, 2020 | Motor Vehicle Accidents, Personal Injury |

Truck drivers who frequently travel across Pennsylvania and other U.S. states are becoming increasingly aware that accidents involving large trucks have been rising year on year. Larger trucks can weigh in excess of 10,000 pounds, which means that accidents involving these types of vehicles can be extremely catastrophic.

While car accidents can’t always be avoided, there are a few ways that truck drivers can reduce tractor-trailer injuries and fatalities. First, since many large truck-related accidents occur due to driver fatigue, truckers can make sure they take regular breaks. Many drivers cut out their designated breaks due to strict deadlines, but taking a 15-minute break at least every couple of hours can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents.

Second, truck drivers should resist the urge to speed as a result of staying on a tight schedule. Although it may be tempting to speed even a few miles above the speed limit, the risk of causing a serious accident or getting pulled over by the cops simply isn’t worth it. In fact, if another driver or an officer reports reckless driving to a trucker’s employer, it could be grounds for termination.

Most importantly, many tractor-trailer accidents happen because of distracted driving. Since truck drivers are on the road for extended periods, they may be tempted to eat or talk on their cellphones while behind the wheel. Drivers are encouraged to wait until their breaks to perform these activities to decrease the likelihood of accidents.

Truck accidents can be extremely detrimental. People can sustain serious injuries or even die. If you’ve been injured in a motor vehicle accident, an attorney may be able to help you recover the costs of expensive medical bills, lost wages due to recovery times, pain and suffering, and more.
