What causes a semi-truck to jackknife?

On Behalf of | May 26, 2020 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Southwestern Pennsylvania residents have come upon many instances of a jackknifed semi. These accidents can be serious and cause major issues on our roadways. Any accident involving a semitruck often has serious injuries due to the size difference of a passenger car and semitruck. A jackknifed semi can cause a serious accident and there are many reasons for their occurrences.

Many drivers in southwestern Pennsylvania have come across an accident involving a jackknifed semi. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, there were over 3,800 people who died because of a truck accident. There are many reasons why a semi would jackknife. One of the most common reasons is improper brake maintenance. If the brakes are not functioning properly it can cause the axles to lock up which can cause the tractor to drag a trailer with locked brakes which can push out along the side of the cab. Another reason for a semi to jackknife is if the truck is traveling too fast or the driver hasn’t had enough training. Sudden braking by a semitruck can often lead to problems, especially if the truck has a full load. The trailer can stop at a different speed than the cab. Finally, road conditions can lead to a serious jackknife semi accident.

A semi-truck accident can be very serious for those who are involved. A family’s life can be turned upside down in the blink of an eye. If a family has been affected by a truck accident, they may want to speak with a legal professional who is skilled in personal injury. An attorney can help their client by investigating the cause of the accident and who is responsible. Compensation may be available for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and other damages.

No one expects they will be in an accident involving a semi-truck. Unfortunately, these accidents occur all too frequently in Pennsylvania. Those who are in an accident due to no fault of their own have the legal right to hold the responsible party accountable for their negligence.
